Double Degree Master Program in Mechanical Engineering in cooperation with East China University of Science and Technology

Overview

The scientific cooperation between Prof. Dr. Valentin Popov, Institute of Mechanics at the TU Berlin, and Professor An Qi, Department of Tribology and Prof. Sih, Department of Material Theory of the ECUST-East China University of Science and Technology, Shanghai is bearing good fruit: With the DDMPES, the Double Degree Master Program in Engineering Science, a dual master program was signed in July 2007 between the two universities. With DDMPES it is possible to obtain two Master's degrees in four semesters, the "Master in Mechanical Engineering" of the ECUST and the "Master in Engineering Science / Physical Engineering" of the TUB.

The program offers a general and physically sound engineering education. It deliberately avoids excessive specialization in order to train flexible and creative scientists who can keep track and find completely new solutions. Such researchers are very sought after in the industry in Germany as well as in China and are used in particular in the development departments of German and international companies. In addition to the mathematical foundations as well as technical and non-technical elective modules, course-specific knowledge is also imparted. For this purpose, two major fields of study are to be selected from the following offers: Numerics and Simulation, Fluid Mechanics, Mechatronics, Solid State Physics, Thermodynamics and / or Technical Acoustics.

It is envisaged that the students spend one year at the partner university and earn half of the required 120 ECTS credits. This requires a bachelor's degree from a technical university in Germany or China. In addition, those interested have to prove their knowledge of the Chinese and English language or in revers interested students of the ECUST have to prove their knowledge of the German language.

After two dozen double master degrees from the TU Berlin with France, Great Britain, Poland, Korea and Russia, DDMPES is already the fifth double master program with a Chinese university.

Course and Structure

The program offers a general and physically sound engineering education. Excessive specialization is deliberately avoided to train flexible and creative scientists who can keep track and find completely new solutions.Such researchers are always welcome in the industry and are often used in the development departments of German and international companies. In addition to the basics, of course, subject-specific knowledge is taught. There are two main areas of study to choose from:

  • Numerics and simulation
  • Fluid mechanics
  • Mechatronik
  • Solid State Physics
  • Thermodynamics
  • Technical acoustics

The DDMPES provides for a 2-year study. During this time, 120 credits have to be achieved after ECTS. Of these, 60 units must be provided at the TUB and 60 at the ECUST. The study is divided into the following units:

  • 18 credits Mathematics
  • 24 credits + Project (6 credits) Major field of studyt
  • 24 credits + Projekt (6 Credits) second major field of study
  • 12 credits technical elective modules
  • 12 credits non-technical elective modules
  • 18 credits Master-thesis (24 credits at the TPU)

The exact options can be found in the current module catalog on the Internet.
